What comes first: Imagination, innovation?

What comes first; imagination, creativity or innovation?

And how critical is imagination to advance humankind?

These questions have been examined by two academics; Eric Liu, a former speechwriter for US President Bill Clinton, and Scott Noppe-Brandon, Lincoln Center Institute executive director.

They coined the term, the ICI Continuum to explain their conclusions, saying, “imagination begets creativity, and creativity begets innovation”.

In their co-written book, ‘Imagine First’, they point out “any effective approach to change, improvement, reform, or reinvention - or anything - must begin with a full development of the habits of imagination”.

“There is no innovation when the imagination is starved. Period.”

In recognition of the ICI Continuum, they encourage the practice of imagination to gain a level of fitness in the area.

Imagination, they stress, is a muscle that can be toned and strengthened.

“So what’s the best way to ensure imaginative fitness?” they ask. “Well, think about the best way to stay committed to any workout regimen. You do it with others.”

That’s good news for Imagination Session® where we provide an exercise in collective imagination to make a pathway forward for the steps that follow; creativity and innovation.
